“Underdressed at the Symphony,” Faye Webster

Underdressed at the Symphony by the American Faye Webster, on the excellent Secretly Canadian label (ANOHNI, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Le Ren, among others), is somewhat destabilizing. We are first delighted to hear the intimate ballad Thinking about You who opens the disk, then arrives But Not Kiss… This strange title requires several listens before we finally realize that it is a kind of sonic UFO, neither great nor bad. In short, because we must not dwell on this gap, let us salute the talent of the singer-songwriter in offering unexpected sound mixtures: vocoder, strings, pedal guitar and sometimes jazz percussion. We think in particular of the deliciously slow Lifetime and at the most incisive Lego Ring, his collaboration with rapper Lil Yachty. With Underdressed at the SymphonyFaye Webster thus always shows herself a little more vulnerable while cleverly dispersing a little lightness throughout.
