On March 16, the Mariupol theater in Ukraine was hit by several bombs while hundreds of civilians had taken refuge there. According to the city authorities, nearly 300 people are buried under the rubble. A team from France Télévisions was able to enter the site for the first time.

The devastated city center of Mariupol (Ukraine) is now under Russian control. Accompanied by a pro-Russian separatist soldier, a team from France Télévisions enters the ruins of the city’s theater on Sunday April 3. The damage is considerable. The ceiling of the great hall collapsed, and the ensuing fire spared practically nothing. In one corner, a Ukrainian flag: hundreds of residents of the neighborhood had come to take refuge in the theater to escape the bombardments.

On the second floor, a few mattresses are still there. The building was considered safe. According to the town hall of Mariupol, 300 people were killed. Russia still denies having bombed the theater. On the ground floor, the rear of the building, which served as a kitchen, collapsed. Most of the civilians had taken refuge in the basement, from which a pestilential smell now emanates.
