Nicolas Jarry, finalist to everyone’s surprise, did not find the fault. Alexander Zverev, world number 5, won on Sunday May 19 against the Chilean in the final of the Masters 1000 in Rome. Winner in two sets (6-4, 7-5), the German, without being overwhelming, was never really worried by his opponent of the day, who was playing his first Masters 1000 final.
Experience and time spent on lessons – three hours more for Jarry – seem to have played their role. Alexander Zverev, realistically, was guilty of only five unforced errors and shone on serve with 95% first serves. The German, who mainly played on his opponent’s backhand, took the upper hand at the end of the first set, breaking Jarry at 5-4. The Chilean had already felt the wind a little earlier in the match, at 4-4, but he managed to save two break points.
The current world number 24 seemed more comfortable in the second set, holding the rallies better. More daring, he even allowed himself several climbs to the net, but made too many direct errors against an impeccable Zverev. He won the Masters 1000 in Rome for the second time, his first in this category since 2021 and Cincinnati. Less than a week before Roland-Garros, he will reach fourth place in the world on Monday.
