The federal government considers it “unacceptable” that Quebecers cannot be answered in French when they call 911. It remains to be seen how the situation can be corrected.
“It is completely unacceptable”, reacted in writing the cabinet of François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.
“Canadians deserve more from their telecommunications service providers, especially when they call 911 and rightly expect to be served in their first official language. We are studying the options available to us. »
Monday, The duty revealed that companies offering IP telephony services had the right to route 911 calls from Quebec to private centers in Ontario, whose first responders do not speak French.
The rules governing these services fall under the Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). And the obligations of companies in terms of Internet telephony are governed by a 2005 CRTC decision which does not deal with the language issue.
The Quebec Ministry of Public Security told the Duty that he had “sensitized the CRTC to this situation deemed problematic and will continue to do so in order to ensure safety for the entire population”.
