For the first time since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, Monday March 25, the United States did not oppose a UN resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza.

By show of hands, Monday March 25 at UN headquarters, ambassadors vote on the resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. In total, fourteen votes in favor, and one abstention which reverses the situation: for the first time since the start of the war in the Middle East, the United States does not oppose a ceasefire resolution in the region. An unprecedented text, which also demands the unconditional release of the hostages.

A hard blow for Israel

“A ceasefire can begin immediately after the release of a first hostage. So we must put pressure on Hamas to do so”, underlined Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the American ambassador to the United Nations. A major setback for Israel, which thus loses the hitherto unwavering support of its American ally at the UN. NGOs hope that this resolution will allow an end to the fighting, which has caused more than 32,000 victims in the enclave, according to Hamas figures.
