“The cycle of impunity that fuels recurring violence must be urgently broken.” The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said on Thursday, December 28, “deeply concerned” by the series of deadly attacks on villages perpetrated in central Nigeria, which left nearly 200 dead, according to local authorities.
“I call on the Nigerian authorities to investigate quickly, thoroughly and independently” on these attacks “and to hold those responsible to account through fair trials”demanded Volker Türk in a press release. “The government must also take significant steps to address the underlying root causes and ensure there is no recurrence of this devastating violence”insisted the head of the UN institution.
Aggravated by climate change and the demographic explosion in this country of 215 million inhabitants, sporadic violence has led to a serious security and humanitarian crisis, between attacks by heavily armed bandits and endless reprisals between communities. The jihadist conflict has also caused the death of more than 40,000 people in northeastern Nigeria and the displacement of more than 2 million people since 2009.
