(United Nations) The United Nations headquarters in New York was sealed off late Thursday morning due to the presence of an armed man in front of its gates, Organization officials said.
“The UN headquarters is closed, there is police activity” in front of the UN headquarters, the spokesperson of the Organization, Stéphane Dujarric, confirmed to AFP.
According to an official speaking on condition of anonymity, “a man with a gun threatens to kill himself” in front of one of the building’s entrances.
The avenue along the UN headquarters has been closed to traffic. In photos seen by AFP, the man behind the closing of the building was standing in front of the gate with police nearby, protected by a van.
The closure of the headquarters did not cause any disruption in the buildings where the Security Council was continuing a meeting devoted to Iraq.
