“Un-American Activities,” Molly Nilsson | Le Devoir

The charm of Molly Nilsson’s music still works. Un-American Activities is very political and we can only be pleased about it in these times… With titles like Palestine, The Communist Party And Red Telephone the tone is set: the criticism of forms of oppression is unequivocal and the homage to humanity, solidarity, hope and the struggle against injustice bursts into the open. For the record, the Swedish singer-songwriter based in Berlin imagined, designed and recorded her eleventh studio album in California, in the former home of the writer and opponent of the Nazi regime Lion Feuchtwanger. On the melodies side, we salute the artist’s appetite for new sounds – from the scathing new beat with Jackboots Return to denounce the rise of the extreme right in Germany and of almost hardcore electro on The Beauty of the Duty — while retaining its instantly recognizable synth pop vibes. Music soothes the soul, it seems, especially Molly Nilsson’s.
