Anastasiia Yalanskaya had decided to stay in Kyiv, despite the departure of her family and friends in the face of the advance of Russian troops.
While delivering food to a dog shelter about 30 kilometers from Kyiv, his car was targeted by Russian troops. She was accompanied by two other volunteers, who also perished.
Her friends and family do not understand why Anastasiia was targeted, but believe that the Russians are increasingly targeting civilians to spread fear among the population.
“I had asked him to be very careful. Just one small mistake can be very expensive these days,” her husband says.
It was one of her friends, alerted by the lack of news from Anastasiia, who asked an acquaintance to check on her condition.
The man reported finding the young woman’s vehicle and the three bodies inside. The car was riddled with projectiles which were fired at close quarters, according to the witness.
“She had finished her delivery and was almost home,” says her friend.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Anastasiia had been documenting her days.
The days before her death, she had helped a daycare center where about forty children were confined. She had brought food and diapers. She had also helped a military hospital in the Kyiv region.
She described herself as being proud to be Ukrainian.
“She was a good person, she was always trying to help everyone, she couldn’t help it,” says her husband.
