Before going to the front, Ukrainian soldiers freeze their sperm. The process is offered free of charge by clinics across the country. Reporting.
In their apartment in kyiv (Ukraine), Svetlana and Nicolas have repeatedly discussed their descendants, because he is a soldier. They met only four months before the Russian invasion. “The war accelerated things and made us reflect on the sincerity of our feelings and the values we share”, explains Nicholas. From a relationship without stakes, they are now engaged with a desire for children and an idea: to freeze the soldier’s sperm before he goes to the front.
A decline in population
Svetlana says: “I told her that if injuries damaged her ability to have children, at least we would have this solution.” And if Nicolas didn’t come back from the fights, would he want Svetlana to carry his child? He rocks : “I signed all the paperwork for her to do it.” Like Nicolas, every week, soldiers cross the door of specialized clinics which offer to freeze the sperm of combatants. The war has already caused 100,000 deaths and injuries, so Halyna Strelko, the director of the clinic, fears a drop in population.
