Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cancels all foreign trips

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is canceling all his trips abroad “for the next few days”, his spokesperson Serguiï Nykyforov announced on Wednesday, against the backdrop of a new Russian offensive over the past week in the Kharkiv region.

“Volodymyr Zelensky requested that all international events planned for the coming days be postponed and that new dates be set,” Mr. Nykyforov said on Facebook without saying which trips were canceled. The Ukrainian president was notably expected in Madrid, according to the Spanish royal palace.

The Russian Defense Ministry, for its part, claimed Wednesday the capture of two new villages in northeastern Ukraine, the target for a week of an assault by Russian troops, which pushed Ukrainian forces to retreat into certain areas.

Russian forces “liberated the localities of Glibokié and Lukiantsi in the Kharkiv region and also advanced deep into enemy defenses,” the Russian army said in a statement.

More details to come.
