Meeting for a summit marking its 75th anniversary, NATO is placing Ukraine, still at war with Russia, at the heart of its discussions. The continuation of military aid has been renewed, while the country’s entry into the Alliance is expected to be addressed.
Thirty-nine heads of state for a historic photo: the Atlantic Alliance (NATO) is celebrating its 75th anniversary, an anniversary placed under the sign of Ukraine. The future of the country still prey to the assaults of Russia is the number one topic of this NATO summit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky even made the trip to the United States, an opportunity for the head of state to meet his counterparts, but above all to take stock of the weapons promised by the West.
And in particular the F-16 planes, which kyiv has been waiting for several months on the front. “The F-16s are on their way, deliveries are arriving as we promised, they will fly in Ukrainian skies this summer”assured Anthony Blinken, the United States Secretary of State. Ukraine is also asking for help to better defend its skies, while deadly bombings are increasing. On Monday, 43 people lost their lives following a Russian strike, which notably hit a children’s hospital. One last question will also be at the heart of the discussions: Ukraine’s desire to join NATO.
