In Vancouver, British Columbia, several thousand people responded to the square of the Vancouver Art Gallery, as Russian military forces approached the Ukrainian capital.
“They are bombing the city I grew up in,” protest organizer Pavlo Ponikarovskyi told Global News. “For the last eight years it was just living next to the constant threat of war, but we always hoped they weren’t crazy enough to do a full invasion.”
Coincidentally, behind the crowd dressed in blue and yellow was a large banner with the words “Imagine Peace”, displayed due to an art exhibition about Yoko Ono and her late spouse John Lennon. .
“It’s just heartbreaking to see that we live in one world, but two different realities. Here, everything seems normal, but on the other side of the world, people are dying,” protester Vitaly Shalukin told the media.
A similarly large rally took place near Toronto, Ontario, where people gathered outside the US consulate chanting “Stop the war”.
While Canada’s support is felt, much remains to be done, according to Svitlana Nechyporenko, one of the event’s co-organizers.
“Canada has already been very vocally supportive of Ukraine, but we need more,” she told Global News. “We must act now, because tomorrow, tonight, it may be too late.”
Other marches are scheduled for Sunday in Montreal and Toronto.
