Ukraine: Russia continues to mass its troops, says NATO

Russia continues to strengthen its large military presence on the borders with Ukraine, said Wednesday the NATO Secretary General, who sees “at this stage” no sign of de-escalation despite statements from Moscow.

“We have not seen any de-escalation on the ground at this stage. On the contrary, it appears that Russia continues to strengthen its military presence […] Russia can still invade Ukraine without notice, the capabilities are in place” with more than 100,000 troops, Jens Stoltenberg said at the start of a meeting with Alliance defense ministers in Brussels.

“The reinforcement of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border continues to be a source of concern,” confirmed German Minister Christine Lambrecht.

“We have heard messages from Moscow regarding its willingness to continue diplomatic efforts, and we are ready to discuss. But Russia must walk the talk, withdraw its forces, ease tensions,” added Jens Stoltenberg.

“We are following very closely what Russia is doing. We have seen the arrival of troops and heavy equipment, then the withdrawal of troops, but the equipment and capabilities remain in place,” he stressed.

“We want to see a real, lasting withdrawal, not just an incessant movement of troops […] We are ready to reunite with Russia, but we are preparing for the worst,” he concluded.

“There are signs that give us hope. But it is important to closely observe whether these words are followed by deeds,” said the German minister.
