Ukraine prepares to live ‘without electricity, heating and gas’ after strikes on its energy infrastructure

Without electricity on Tuesday evening, the young student was preparing, in her humorous words, to spend a “romantic evening”. She has stocked up on food, her phone and computer batteries are charged. As for the cold, for Ukrainians it is not yet a topic because “many are used to not warming up until the end of October”she explains.

But with winter coming, the situation could quickly get worse. This is what Ivan Plachkov, former Minister of Energy in Ukraine believes: “The government is preparing with technical teams, equipment to make repairs but we must be ready, at all times, to live without electricity, without heating, and without gas”he said in an interview on an online television.

To maintain the stability of the electricity supply as of Monday evening, the Ukrainians had already reduced their consumption by 10%. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the creation of a “shield” anti-aircraft to deal with indiscriminate bombing from Russia. The Ukrainian governor of the Donetsk region reported on Instagram on Wednesday of an early Russian strike on the central market in the town of Avdiivka, close to the eastern front line. He talks about“at least seven dead and eight injured”.
