(Kyiv) A local official detonated grenades at a municipal meeting in the Zakarpattia region of western Ukraine on Friday, wounding 26 people, authorities said, and opened a terrorism investigation.
Images, published by the police, show a man entering a small room where several people are already seated.
After a short, visibly heated conversation, he takes out his pockets and throws what appear to be grenades to the ground. Several loud explosions, smoke and panicked screams followed, before the video was cut.
It is a “local official” who “detonated grenades” during a municipal meeting in Keretsky, a village in this mountainous region, said the national police.
Twenty-six people were injured, six of whom are in serious condition, she said, adding that doctors were trying to resuscitate the perpetrator.
No motive has at this stage been mentioned by the Ukrainian authorities, but the Ukrainian special services (SBU) have opened an investigation into acts of terrorism.
The national police also investigate the illegal handling of weapons.
The committee meeting on Friday broadcast live on the Internet a video of its session, which shows the official, whose identity has not been made public, entering the room about an hour and a half after the start of the discussions, before to throw grenades.
Many Ukrainians have had access to weapons since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
