Ukraine: meeting Thursday between US and Russian foreign ministers

Riga | The head of American diplomacy Antony Blinken will meet his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Stockholm on Thursday, amid renewed military tensions on the border between Russia and Ukraine, an American official announced on Wednesday.

The US Secretary of State will see the Russian minister after a meeting, still in the Swedish capital on the sidelines of a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kouleba.

Antony Blinken was in Riga, Latvia on Wednesday for a NATO meeting largely devoted to these new tensions.

Present at this meeting, the Ukrainian minister on Wednesday asked the Atlantic Alliance for a “deterrent package” against Russia, suspected by Kiev and the West of preparing a possible invasion of Ukraine. They have denounced in recent weeks “unusual” Russian troop movements on the border with the neighboring country, for the second time this year, and have warned of the “serious consequences” that a hostile military operation would engender.

Moscow in turn accused Kiev on Wednesday of massing troops in the east of the country.
