Despite a whole people behind them and many supporters present in Germany, the Ukrainians did not manage to make them smile. The men ofAndrei Shevchenko lost severely (3-0) against efficient Romanians, Monday June 17, in Munich for their entry into the running.

Despite being dominant at the start of the match, Ukraine was punished by an error from its goalkeeper, shortly before the half-hour mark. Andriy Lunin’s poor recovery was taken advantage of by Dennis Man, who shifted his captain Nicolae Stanciu, author of a magnificent strike into the top corner of the Madrid goalkeeper (29th). Stunned, Mykhaïlo Mudryk’s teammates had a hard time recovering.

From the start of the second half, the players ofEdward Iordanescu continued to push, and scored a second goal with another long shot from Razvan Marin (53rd). With their heads underwater, the Ukrainians conceded a third goal straight away, from a corner, with a flat foot from Denis Dragus on a cross from the inevitable Dennis Man (57th). Ukraine’s more spirited end to the match was not rewarded with a goal.

To hope to continue their progress in the competition, the Ukrainians will almost have to win against Slovakia on Friday. Before the second meeting of Group E between Belgium and Slovakia at 6 p.m. on Monday, Romania therefore takes the lead in the group.
