Ukraine is still waiting for the surface-to-air missiles promised by Canada a year ago

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says improving air defense is a top priority for his country in the new year, but putting air defense systems on the battlefield is happening slowly.

The surface-to-air missile system that Canada committed to buying for Ukraine a year ago has not arrived and it is unclear whether the federal government knows when it will be sent to Ukraine.

The Department of National Defense says Canada paid $406 million to the American government for this system last March.

A ministry spokesperson said the US government had signed a contract with arms manufacturer Raytheon for its construction.

But Kongsberg, the other company involved in building these ground-to-air systems, says it has no contracts with the United States or Canada related to this donation.

A Pentagon spokesperson did not provide information on the status of the defense system, but instead referred questions to Canadian officials.
