Ukraine: at least two dead and 20 injured in a Russian strike in the south (governor)

A Russian strike on Friday morning in Mykolaiv, in southern Ukraine, left at least two dead and 20 injured, according to a report released by the governor of the region, Vitaly Kim.

“Two dead and 20 injured in a strike on a residential area at this stage,” Kim said on his Telegram account.

Mykolaiv, a port and industrial city of almost half a million inhabitants before the war, is still under Ukrainian control, but it is close to the Kherson region, occupied by the Russians since the start of the invasion on 24 february.

Although the fighting in this region is less intense than in Donbass (east), the Ukrainian and Russian armies clash there daily, with exchanges of artillery mainly.

Mykolaiv remains the target of Moscow’s forces because it lies on the road to Odessa, Ukraine’s largest port, 130 km to the southwest.

Earlier in the morning, Vitaly Kim had indicated that four apartment buildings had been “hit” by Russian missiles, as well as “an installation”, without specifying however whether it was a military site. or not.

“One dead and six injured (..) including a child,” he said, according to a first assessment. “Relief operations are continuing,” he added.
