Moscow | Russian President Vladimir Poutine on Thursday judged Washington’s reaction to Moscow’s security proposals as “positive”, which notably demanded that NATO and the United States cease their military support to Ukraine.
“For the time being we are seeing a positive reaction, our American partners tell us that they are ready to start this discussion, these negotiations, from the start of the year in Geneva,” Poutin said at a conference. press, adding that any future enlargement of the Atlantic Alliance was “unacceptable” to Russia.
The West accuse Moscow of aggressive inclinations against Kiev, the Russian army having massed tens of thousands of soldiers on the border with Ukraine, of which Russia has already annexed part of the territory.
Moscow, which on the contrary claims to want to ensure its security in the face of “provocations” from Kiev and the West, presented two treaties last week, one intended for the United States and the other for NATO, summarizing its demands. for a de-escalation.
These texts prohibit the enlargement of NATO, to Ukraine in particular, and limit Western military cooperation in Eastern Europe and the former USSR, without imposing similar measures on Russia.
“The ball is in their court. They must answer us, ”said Vladimir Poutine on Thursday, affirming that representatives for negotiations in Geneva at the beginning of 2022 had already been appointed. “I hope that the situation will evolve in this direction”, he added.
