A somewhat reassuring record. The UK recorded its hottest New Year’s Day on Saturday (January 1) with over 16 degrees Celsius in London, the UK Meteorological Service (Met Office) reported.
A temperature of 16.2 degrees was measured in St James’s Park, a park in the heart of the capital, the Met Office said on Twitter. The previous record dates back to 1916, when a temperature of 15.6 degrees was recorded in Cornwall.

The United Kingdom had already recorded its hottest New Year’s Eve on Friday, with 15.8 degrees during the day in Somerset (south-west of England) and up to 16.5 degrees in the evening in Bala, town of North Wales.
The previous New Year’s Eve record was in 2011 when a temperature of 14.8 degrees was measured in Colwyn Bay, a seaside town in Wales.
This year the UK was “overall slightly warmer and drier than average, with variations across the country, especially in precipitation”Mike Kendon of the Met Office’s National Climate Information Center said in a statement on Thursday.
