Removing a third of beer from these typical half-liter glasses is the proposal made by scientists from Cambridge in the United Kingdom, for public health reasons. Their study shows that this reduction would help reduce alcohol consumption.

The initiative is causing a reaction in London pubs. Victoria, for example: she has her habits at the Duke of York. Sitting with a friend, sipping a pint full of lager, she listens to the result of this study with a furrowed brow. “I’d like to think it’s effective, but it’s another gimmick to get you to pay more for less. My only question is: how much would it cost?”

The experiment carried out by the scientists suggests reducing the quantity by 30%, for a glass 30% cheaper. And the The result was clear: customers drink on average 10% less beer. However, that doesn’t convince Andrew, leaning on the counter. He doesn’t want anyone to touch his pint, it even makes him angry. For him, 30%, “it’s hugeit doesn’t make sense.” “My pint, I’m taking the time to drink it. I don’t care what other countries do. It’s still a bit of our culture that we want to make disappear, in all areas.”

“Instead of drinking one beer, I’d drink two, that’s for sure.”

Behind the bar, Ian listens to his customer. For the manager of the establishment, this idea is absurd, it is “a drop in the ocean”. “This is not what will change mentalities or reduce alcoholism. Here, people talk and meet each other.” For him, it would be better “tackle the sale of alcohol in supermarkets. Yes, that would have a huge impact.”

Only 12 pubs participated in the study which led to this proposal, and none has continued the experiment.
