UK protests | Ottawa warns Canadians to ‘exercise a high degree of caution’

(Ottawa) The Canadian government has updated its “travel advisory” for the United Kingdom following a series of sometimes violent protests.

It says visitors should “exercise a high degree of caution” in the country and notes the protests and violent clashes between demonstrators and police since last week.

Travel advice warns that even peaceful protests can turn violent at any time and deteriorate quickly.

The violent unrest was sparked in part by misinformation on social media, which stoked anger following a knife attack at a dance class that killed three girls and injured 10 people.

False rumors circulating on the internet that the suspect was a Muslim asylum seeker led to attacks on immigrants and mosques.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said this week he was creating a “standing army” of specialist police officers and strengthening the justice system to prepare for hundreds of arrests.
