The Ugandan Minister of Health confirmed on Tuesday 20 September that a “epidemic” Ebola virus disease (EVD) was ongoing in the country. A 24-year-old man, living in Mubende district, succumbed to the disease. This is the first death recorded in the country for three years. This case comes from a strain “relatively rare” so-called Sudanese, which had not been reported in Uganda since 2012, said WHO Africa. The organization will deploy “a team and equipment to help in the investigations and the response”.

This advert “Follows an investigation by the National Rapid Response Team into six suspected deaths in the district [de Mubende] this month”detailed the WHO. “There are currently eight suspected cases receiving care at a health facility”she added.

Uganda has experienced Ebola outbreaks before, the most recent of which in 2019 killed at least five people. In 2000, 200 people died in an epidemic in the north of the country. The deadliest outbreak on the continent took place between 2013 and 2016 in West Africa, killing more than 11,300 people.
