(Toronto) The United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW Canada) union provided services to nearly 800 Uber drivers and couriers embroiled in disputes with the company last year, it said. Monday Uber Canada.
The food transportation and delivery company said about 794 workers have received representation services from the union since signing an agreement in January 2022.
Of these cases, 201 benefited from a positive resolution. As many as 72 of those cases involved workers whose access to the Uber app had been revoked but regained access to the platform, while another 129 had account issues resolved.
The agreement between Uber Canada and UFCW Canada allows the private sector union to represent Canadian drivers and couriers, but does not organize the workers.
The deal drew criticism from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), which last year filed a complaint with the Ontario Labor Relations Board.
CUPW says the agreement violates the Labor Relations Act because it was entered into without the workers’ knowledge and claims that Uber used its app and email lists to promote it to its drivers and couriers. Uber has denied those charges.
