Torontonians will be able to have cannabis delivered to their homes starting Monday using the Uber Eats platform, under a new partnership with online retailer Leafly.
The home food delivery platform, owned by the American giant Uber Technologies, explained that this new association will make it possible to process orders placed with the Hidden Leaf Cannabis, Minerva Cannabis and Shivaa’s Rose shops.
This will be a first experience for Uber in the delivery of cannabis.
Concretely, customers, who must be 19 years of age or older, will place their order on the Uber Eats application. For their part, through Leafly’s tools, the stores will be able to receive and process them.
Retailers will then have to send staff certified by Ontario’s cannabis retail training program, CannSell, to deliver the order to the customer. The buyer’s state of sobriety and age will be validated at the time of delivery.
Uber did not specify what percentage of the transaction it will take or what will go to Leafly.
The company presented this project as one more step to reduce the market share of illegal sellers.
It was already possible for Ontario customers to place their order for cannabis using Uber Eats, since last November, but they then had to go to the store themselves to pick up their purchases.
The service will not be offered in Quebec, where the Quebec Cannabis Society itself offers a delivery service.
