The U22 Beach Volleyball European Championships are set to take place from August 7 to 10, 2025. Following the successful events in 2017 and 2021, this prestigious tournament will again be hosted at Beach Volleyball Baden, presented by SPORTLAND Niederösterreich.
NÖ/BADEN. The dynamic duo of HSG-Events, Dominik Gschiegl and Nicolas Hold, along with the Austrian Volleyball Association (ÖVV), are thrilled to welcome the top young volleyball talent back to Baden’s beach venue. “We are delighted to have been entrusted by the European Volleyball Association to host the European Youth Championships once more. This U22 European Championship marks our return to the scenic beach bath in Baden,” they expressed enthusiastically. Ongoing discussions are also underway with the ÖVV regarding the potential for a World Beach Pro Tour event.
ÖVV President Gernot Leitner added, “We are extremely pleased to bring the U22 Beach Volleyball European Championships for both girls and boys to Austria next summer. This event serves as an incredible platform for our young athletes, providing them with additional motivation as they prepare for the championships. A heartfelt thanks goes to HSG Events for their unwavering commitment to successfully organizing such significant events, a fact they have demonstrated time and again.”
U22 European Championships: Spotlight on Future Stars
The importance of the U22 European Championships is highlighted by the impressive performances of past participants. In 2017, the men’s title was clinched by Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Artem Yarzutkin, while Svetlana Kholomina and Nadezda Makroguzova took home the women’s title. These talented Russian teams made a significant impact on the World Tour until international competitions were halted for Russian athletes due to geopolitical tensions.
During that same competition, Norwegian duo Anders-Berntsen Mol and Mathias Berntsen secured the silver medal, with Austria’s own Paul Buchegger and Moritz Pristauz taking the bronze. In 2021, amidst pandemic restrictions, Swedish players David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig claimed the men’s European title, and they currently rank at the top of the FIVB world rankings as the reigning Olympic champions.
“At Beach Volleyball Baden, our focus has always been on nurturing youth talent. These athletes are the stars of tomorrow, as we saw impressively with Åhman and Hellvig four years ago. Today, they are leading the pack,” Gschiegl remarked.
Austrian Contenders to Watch
This year’s championships promise to be particularly exciting for Austria. Lilli Hohenauer and Lia Berger, the reigning U18 European champions and U20 EM bronze medalists, will represent Austria as a formidable duo. In the men’s category, Austria’s Timo Hammarberg and Tim Berger are also in contention, having been crowned U20 European champions in 2022 and reaching the quarter-finals in last year’s U22 European Championship.
“The events at the beach bath in Baden are a staple of the Lower Austrian sports calendar each year. Hosting the U22 Beach Volleyball European Championship brings both Austrian and international youth talents to our region. The U22 championships in Lower Austria are a testament to our commitment to youth development. A big shout-out and thank you to the organizers and volunteers for their hard work. I wish everyone great success and fun, and I look forward to cheering on our red-white-red athletes in person,” stated Lower Austria’s Sports Provincial Councilor LH Deputy Udo Landbauer.
Beach Volleyball Baden has a rich history that began 20 years ago with an A-Cup. Since 2018, it has become a prominent stop on the FIVB World Tour. “Beach Volleyball Baden offers an unparalleled experience. You can’t get closer to the stars of beach volleyball anywhere else in the world. It’s a place of celebrated victories, heartbreaking defeats, thrilling rallies, and the unique ambiance of the Danube Waltz. Beach Volleyball Baden is all about experiencing the sport up close—an event that excites, captivates, and fuses top-tier athletics with a vibrant summer atmosphere. We truly love beach volleyball,” concluded organizer Hold from HSG-Events.
