On September 16, 2022, the death of Mahsa Amini, three days after her arrest for not respecting the wearing of the veil, had provoked a historic revolt in Iran. Two years later, the anger remains present.
Two years after the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman arrested for not wearing her veil “correctly”, Iranian women’s fight for freedom continues. Her death sparked a wave of protests in defense of women’s rights. The 2022 uprising, which shook the foundations of the regime, claimed the lives of hundreds of protesters and led to the arrest of more than thousands. As demands went unanswered, the repression worsened.
More and more women are practicing civil disobedience by refusing to wear the compulsory hijab, which has become a symbol of oppression, and are making their anger heard. Testimonies of violence suffered by women arrested in the street because they refused to cover their heads have multiplied. Despite the arrival in power of a new government led by Masoud Pezeshkian, described as “reformer“, the repression remains brutal.
