Around 3 p.m. on Saturday, the emergency services were called to intervene on the Rivière du Nord in Saint-Adèle concerning a person in distress.

A group of six experienced kayakers had gathered to descend the Rivière du Nord. During the crossing of the rapids, a 58-year-old woman allegedly capsized from her boat and she remained stuck underwater despite wearing her life jacket, informs the spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Nicholas Scholtus.

Emergency services and relatives tried to rescue the lady. She was transported to a hospital where, unfortunately, she was pronounced dead.

An investigator went to the scene to clarify the causes and circumstances of the event.

A second drowning occurred Saturday afternoon in Waltham, Outaouais. Emergency services attended the Black River to a person in distress in a body of water.

Two women decided to go down the Black River on inflated tubes. One of them dropped a personal item in the river and she allegedly tried to recover it by jumping into the water without a life jacket.

The 68-year-old had to be rescued as she lost consciousness in the water. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.
