It has been more than seven months since the war in Ukraine broke out. Among those who chose to stay, a couple of photographers. Their goal: to immortalize moments of joy. They were wedding photographers and now they go to the front lines to document this conflict.
Before the war, they defined themselves as photographers of love, specialists in shots of couples and stories of the heart. They are now at the heart of history, reporters on the front lines, among the soldiers and the destruction. The photos of Vlada and Kostiantyn Liberov, married and partners, tell as much about the change in their own destiny as that of their country. We met them on the weekend of Saturday October 8 and Sunday October 9 in Bayeux (Calvados), during a journalism festival. Only a few days ago, they accompanied the Ukrainian counter-offensive.
The two 30-year-old photographers changed worlds almost immediately, without hesitation, when the Russian invasion began on February 24. “We wanted to do something useful for our country. And as we laugh at home, he is a bad fighter, I am a bad doctor”, said Vlada Liberov. Useful, like these shots of wounded soldiers, frightened populations or these children who play soldiers to do like adults. Photos of the couple are published by newspapers around the world. They have promised to remain photoreporters when the conflict is over.
