Two trails to end fall in style

This text is part of the special Pleasures notebook

Although the color season is well underway, it is not yet over. Less frequented, still shimmering and fragrant, the hiking trails are perfect for those seeking tranquility. First text in a series of three which offer hikes, a question of enjoying them until the last sheet.

In autumn, the trails (superb indeed!) are a bit victims of their own success. We are now in the second part of autumn, which is particularly loved by true hiking enthusiasts. In nature we find a peaceful atmosphere, conducive to meditation. However, we take care to bring with us everything that can eliminate the small weather problems that could arise: rain clothing, waterproof boots, gaiters and light gloves. Snacks and water are also essential.

Parc des Sommets, in the Eastern Townships

At the gates of Bromont, this conservation park, which was created following tremendous citizen mobilization, offers multiple trail networks totaling 140 km. Across 150 hectares of mountain slopes, forests, lakes and panoramic viewpoints, the marked trails take the hiker closer to this striking protected natural environment. Like the mountain network, some 50 km for all levels, which climb to viewpoints erected on the summits of Mounts Bernard, Horizon and Spruce. From there, you can gorge yourself on a colorful and opulent landscape, just for yourself. The Mount Gale network, for its part, contains around fifteen kilometers of trails which run through an ecosystem particularly conducive to ornithological observation. It leads to a superb waterfall, to Lake Gale as well as to an outpost for a brand new hiking trail: The Steep. This connects five peaks along a route, classified as difficult, of 900 meters. After a steep ascent and a few rope passages, the hiker reaches natural promontories, at the forefront of a breathtaking landscape. In every sense of the term.

Practical information: The Mont Gale network is not accessible to non-residents on weekends. Daily access fee for the hike: $9.57 (family tickets available). Here, as elsewhere, the strict Leave No Trace rules apply.

Gentilly River Regional Park, in Center-du-Québec

Here is one that is getting a complete makeover with, starting this year, new accommodation options, including five new chalets and two new ready-to-camp in the heart of nature. A brand new suspended footbridge now joins the two access points: Sainte-Marie and Sainte-Gertrude, via the Grand Trunk trail. The 25 km of trails, which crisscross the territory, are aimed at families and strong hikers, in particular circuits 5 and 6, which together total around twelve kilometers in an intimate area. Please note that circuit 2 is accessible to people with reduced mobility. Picnic tables and recreational facilities dot the park, several of which are shared with cyclists.

Practical information: Daily access rate for the hike: $8.50 (family tickets available).
