Two suspects were arrested by the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) in connection with the major fire that occurred last Friday at 400 Notre-Dame Street East, which caused the death of two people.
The head of the Major Crimes Section, Commander Jean-Sébastien Caron, will meet the media this afternoon to provide more information on this case.
The burned building housed a restaurant on the ground floor as well as Le 402, a 19-room youth hostel, on the second and third floors.
It belongs to Émile Benamor, also the owner of a building located on Place d’Youville which burned in March 2023, causing seven victims.
Mr. Benamor’s offices were riddled with bullets Tuesday evening. Three people were arrested by the SPVM in this case.
In the wake of last Friday’s blaze, several merchants in Old Montreal had entrusted Duty be concerned about the potential presence of criminal groups active in the area.
The chief coroner of Quebec, Mr.e Reno Bernier has since ordered a public inquiry to shed light on this matter, as requested by the Minister of Public Security, François Bonnardel.
The victims of the fire are Léonor Geraudie, 43, and her daughter, Vérane Reynaud Geraudie, 7, originally from France.
