The German federal prosecutor’s office announced on Thursday April 18 the arrest of two Russians suspected of being spies and of having planned acts of sabotage. The two men, who also have German nationality, were arrested in Bayreuth, Bavaria, the anti-terrorist prosecution said in a press release.

Dieter S. and Alexander J are accused of scouting potential targets for attacks, including “American armed forces installations” stationed in Germany, in order to undermine military support for Ukraine. Police also searched the homes and workplaces of the two men on Wednesday. They are suspected “of having been active for a foreign intelligence service” in what prosecutors describe as “particularly serious case” spy.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the start of 2022, Germany has been rocked by several espionage cases. A former German secret agent is currently on trial in Berlin for having transmitted classified information to the Russian security services (FSB) in the fall of 2022, which he categorically denies.
