The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced, Friday October 11, new Israeli fire on a Blue Helmet position in southern Lebanon. Two Sri Lankan soldiers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were injured in the morning in Raqouna, franceinfo learned from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense. The shots came from a “Israeli Merkava tank” who has “targeted a UNIFIL tower”reported the official Lebanese agency ANI.

One of the two soldiers affected, hospitalized in serious condition after receiving shrapnel in the neck, was operated on and is now out of danger, according to the Sri Lankan government. The other suffered minor injuries. UNIFIL has around 125 Sri Lankan soldiers, out of a total strength of 10,400 peacekeepers deployed between Lebanon and Israel.

On Thursday, UNIFIL had already accused Israeli troops of shooting “repeatedly” on his positions, injuring two Indonesian peacekeepers. These facts triggered a diplomatic outcry, with Italy going so far as to raise possible “war crimes”. On Friday, Lebanese diplomacy said “condemn in the strongest possible terms the intentional and systematic shooting by the Israeli army of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon”.
