Two parents in their twenties have been charged after the death of their five-month-old baby in suspicious circumstances in Brest (Finistère), the Brest prosecutor’s office announced in a press release on Monday, September 9. The father has also been imprisoned.
Radiological examinations following the death of the infant, which occurred on Saturday midday, had revealed “highlighting numerous bone lesions of non-pathological origin and compatible with an external action”according to the prosecution. The 28-year-old father and the 24-year-old mother were then taken into custody. During his hearing, the father admitted “that he was unintentionally the cause of the bone injuries and fractures observed”explaining “having carried out certain brutal gestures on the child without measuring his strength”according to the statement. The child’s mother “had also noticed, well before his death, bruises on her son’s body. She had then entertained suspicions about her partner regarding these marks”the prosecution said.
“Despite these findings, she had refrained from reporting the facts or consulting a doctor,” also explains the prosecution. The autopsy carried out on Monday “confirmed the presence of numerous bone lesions of different ages” without being able to formally establish “the causes of death”according to the press release.
