Two Palestinians and an Israeli officer were killed Wednesday in an exchange of fire near the crossing point between Israel and the Palestinian city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Ministry of Health and the Israeli army said.
The army said in a statement that an officer was killed in an exchange of fire when “two suspects approached” the Jalameh crossing, near Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah confirmed the death of “two young men” during these clashes.
According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, they are Ahmed Ayman Ibrahim Abed, 23, and Abdel Rahman Hani Soubhi Abed, 22.
The army did not immediately specify the identity of the officer killed.
Since a series of anti-Israeli attacks in March, in which 19 people were killed, the army has stepped up its operations in the northern West Bank, territory occupied since 1967 by the Jewish state, particularly in the regions of Nablus and Jenin where Palestinian armed groups are active.
These operations, frequently interspersed with clashes, left dozens dead on the Palestinian side and led to the arrest of more than 1,500 people in the occupied West Bank, according to the head of the Israeli army, Aviv Kohavi.
Israeli security services are also on their toes on Wednesday in northern Israel before the evening football match in Haifa between Maccabi Haifa and PSG.
