The National Hockey League (NHL) announced Tuesday night that the Arizona Coyotes and the Los Angeles Kings will meet in Melbourne, Australia in two preseason games.
Both matchups will take place on September 23 and 24 at Rod Laver Arena. This will be the league’s first game in the Southern Hemisphere.
The organization of these duels will allow “to grow the sport”, according to the league’s international strategy, she said in a press release.
“Not only is this a victory for the fans, but it will bring huge benefits to the city’s tourism. These matches will also serve to promote Melbourne to millions of potential viewers around the world,” said Steve Dimopoulos, Australia’s Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events.
“The Arizona Coyotes and Los Angeles Kings are two of the most promising young teams in our League and among our most innovative and adventurous franchises. We look forward to their two matches at Rod Laver Arena and we know that this historic visit will delight our many fans in Australia,” said commissioner Gary Bettman.
