Murder in Grande-Synthe: two minors were indicted for murder
(France 2)

The two alleged perpetrators of the ambush which cost Philippe’s life on the night of April 15 to 16 were arrested. They are only 14 and 15 years old, a youth violence that is surprising.

Philippe Coopman, 22, was not targeted by chance, according to the statements of the two suspects during their police custody. They admitted that their trap was well premeditated. According to the public prosecutor of Dunkirk (North), Charlotte Huet, the alleged perpetrators arranged a meeting with the victim via a dating site, posing as a young girl. The investigations will have to determine whether Philippe Coopman had arranged this meeting in the middle of the night in a parking lot in Grande-Synthe (North).

Another victim?

Attacked with a tear gas bomb and brutally beaten, the suspects say they wanted to punish him. “The qualification of assassination was retained by the prosecution, that is to say murder aggravated by the circumstance of ambush”, explained the prosecutor. The youngest of the suspects, known for multiple crimes, is only 14 years old. He admits to having struck, and the 15-year-old claims to have been a simple spectator. Investigators are also seeking to verify whether this same gang had already caused a victim, because a man was attacked in similar circumstances a few days earlier. The minors were placed in pre-trial detention. One or more accomplices are still being sought.
