The coalition of parties supporting Emmanuel Macron has grown from 350 to 245 deputies in five years. Enough to go from an absolute majority to a very relative majority.

The presidential majority… less and less of a majority. The coalition of parties that support Emmanuel Macron, Together!, won 245 seats in the National Assembly during the second round of legislative elections on Sunday June 19. A score well below the 289 deputies needed to reach an absolute majority; and in free fall compared to 2017, when La République en Marche and the Modem won 350 seats from the Palais Bourbon.

Despite the re-election of Emmanuel Macron in April 2022, La République en Marche, le Modem and Horizon achieve an unprecedented underperformance: it is the smallest relative majority of the Fifth Republic. What raise the question of the capacity of the head of state to be able to govern the country and to vote the promised reforms, in particular that of pensions.

The presidential majority loses many constituencies against the National Rally, particularly in the Mediterranean arc, in Aquitaine and in the northeast quarter of France; as well as facing the Nupes, especially in western Paris, the inner suburbs, and the Overseas Territories.

Symbols of the slap received, the defeats of the Macronist leaders in the Assembly have multiplied: President Richard Ferrand, beaten in his stronghold of Finistère, and the boss of the LREM deputies, Christophe Castaner, in the Alpes-de-Haute -Provence. Three ministers, Amélie de Montchalin (Ecological Transition), Brigitte Bourguignon (Health) and Justine Benin (Sea) have also bitten the dust and will have to leave the ranks of the executive.
