The duo clocked a combined time of two minutes, 3.21 seconds (1:01.45 and 1:01.76) for their first two runs at the Yanqing National Sliding Center.

It is 1.16 seconds behind that of the Germans Laura Nolte and Deborah Levi, who took the provisional first place thanks to the two fastest descents of the day (1: 01.04 and 1: 01.01).

Another German crew, that of Mariama Jamanka and Alexandra Burghardt, is in second place, five tenths of a second behind their compatriots (2:02.55). Jamanka and Burghardt are the reigning Olympic champions in this event.

Americans Elana Meyers Taylor and Sylvia Hoffman completed their two runs in 2:02.79, earning them third place.

De Bruin will therefore aim for a second podium in Beijing, having finished third in the monobob. However, the task will not be easy, since the Canadian duo is trailing by 42 hundredths of a second behind third position.

The last two rounds will take place on Saturday.

Olympic monobob champion Kaillie Humphries of the United States will also have some work to do if she wants to add a fifth Olympic medal to her collection.

Teamed with Kaysha Love, Humphries took provisional fifth place with a time of 2:03.38, nearly six tenths of a second behind third place.

Two other Canadian pairs are taking part in the event.

Cynthia Appiah and Dawn Richardson Wilson’s is provisional eighth (2:03.64), while Melissa Lotholz and Sara Villani finished 16and lap time (2:04.21).
