Two Important Reminders | Tough week for Ford

The past week has been a trying one for Ford, to say the least. The blue oval brand had to resolve to deploy two separate recall campaigns for a number of models, including the Mustang Mach-E.

The first seeks to solve a problem of overheating of the contactors of the high voltage batteries of the Ford Mustang Mach-E. This can occur following a rapid recharge or during sustained accelerations. Ford warns that the issue can cause a sudden loss of power, which obviously can be unfortunate when passing maneuvers or just highway speeds.

To remedy the situation, an update of the diagnostic and battery energy monitoring secondary control modules will be required. This can be done remotely or at a dealership next month. According to Ford Canada, 7609 Mach-E 2021 and 2022 are affected by this recall. Pending this update, Ford is suspending delivery of new Mach-Es, but this does not constitute a suspension of sales, we are told.

Transmission problem for others

The second campaign has a somewhat larger scope. Owners of no fewer than 394,192 vehicles will need to schedule an appointment to correct a defect that could cause their vehicle to suddenly move when stationary, despite the gear lever being in the “Park” position. This is caused by a possible detachment of the cable from the lever, thus preventing the driver from selecting the desired position.

A defect notably affects the 2015 Ford Edge.

Ford will notify affected owners and will replace the recalled vehicles’ “shift cable bushing” and add a protective cap. In the meantime, drivers must activate their handbrake at all times when the vehicle is parked. The affected models are: C-Max (2013 to 2018), Edge (2015 to 2018), Escape (2013 to 2019), Fusion (2013 to 2016) and Transit Connect (2013 to 2021).
