Two fatal collisions occurred Thursday in Montérégie

(Montreal) Two fatal collisions occurred in Montérégie late Thursday afternoon. One would be attributable to bad weather conditions, thunderstorms having swept across southern Quebec on Thursday, but the cause of the second remains to be determined.

The first occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Route 132 in Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka, near Montée Léger. Two vehicles collided head-on, said Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokesperson Stéphane Tremblay.

One of the drivers, an 82-year-old man, was pronounced dead in hospital. The firefighters had to use the jaws of life to get him out of the vehicle, while he was stuck there.

The other driver, a 21-year-old man, suffered serious injuries, but his life is not believed to be in danger.

Route 132 was closed in both directions between Route 201 and Route 236 in order to conduct the investigation.

The second accident occurred a little further east, in Saint-Chrysostome, around 5:30 p.m. A head-on collision on Route 209 involved three vehicles, according to the SQ spokesperson.

A driver would have encroached on the opposite lane where two vehicles were traveling in the opposite direction. The first vehicle, a mini van, managed to avoid it before going off the road which ended up against a Hydro-Quebec pole.

The second vehicle, which was driving behind the minivan, collided head-on with the one that had deviated from its lane.

The driver of the offending vehicle, a 45-year-old man, died in the collision. The one in the vehicle he collided with, a 19-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The four occupants of the minivan were not injured.

The cause of this second accident remains unknown. Investigators were on site Thursday evening to shed light on this event.

Route 209 was closed between the climb of the 4e Rang and the Mercier climb.

Hydro-Québec teams were also dispatched to the site to repair the broken pole. Several residents of 4e Rank were without electricity.
