Two dead and injured in ‘terrorist’ attack in northern Israel

At least two people died and others were injured in a “terrorist” attack Sunday night in the northern Israeli town of Hadera, rescue workers and police said, who said they killed the assailants.

“Two Israelis killed in a terrorist attack in Hadera”, located between the cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa, underlined in a brief message the Magen David Adom, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, which said it treated six people for injuries related to this violence.

“Two terrorists opened fire in the direction of officers, which caused the death of two passers-by,” said the Israeli police, adding that special forces had killed the two assailants.

Footage from Hadera’s surveillance cameras, broadcast by Israeli channels, shows two clothed men opening fire with automatic weapons in a street where cars are driving, before heading for the sidewalk. On the spot, in Hadera, an AFP journalist saw a body lying on the ground.

This attack comes as Israel hosts a summit on Sunday and Monday bringing together the heads of diplomacy from the United States, Egypt, the Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco in a locality in the Negev desert (south).

Two men and two women were killed last Tuesday in a stabbing and ramming attack in the main city in the Negev desert.

The assailant was identified by authorities as Mohammed Abu al-Kiyan. This teacher from the Bedouin town of Hura, in the Negev, was sentenced in 2016 to four years in prison for planning to travel to Syria to fight within the jihadist group Islamic State and for preaching his apology.
