Two bridges and departmental roads collapse after storms in the South of the Channel

The inhabitants of Buais-les-Monts could only see the damage. This Saturday afternoon, the town of Sud-Manche, bordering Mayenne, was hard hit by a stormy episode. Consequence of these heavy rains: two bridges and departmental roads collapsed.

Two bridges washed away by heavy rain

It is first the D588 which spans the Tabuère stream who gave in. “The bridge was obstructed by branches and with the weight of the water, it left with the road. There is a lack of about twenty meters of junction between the departments of Manche and Mayenne”describes Eric Courteille, the mayor of Buais-les-Monts.

“This rupture caused a small tsunami and therefore the bridge after, on the D158, also left. It was very fast, given the strength of the water“, he explains. “It’s quite impressive to see!” Never, to his knowledge, had the town experienced an episode of such intensity.

Two drowned dead cattle

The two axes are cut off from traffic, until the reconstruction work that will be carried out by the department. “We will have to think about other routes, because these were roads very popular with locals and heavy goods vehicles who want to avoid going through Saint-Hilaire”says Eric Courteille.

Two cattle were also swept away and drowned. Fortunately, no human casualties is to be deplored. “People are still shocked, some have had their cellars flooded. But no one needs to be rehoused.” Eric Courteille plans to make a declaration of natural disaster in the next few days.
