Will the early legislative elections take place on June 30 and July 7? Two appeals to cancel the vote were filed with the Constitutional Council on Tuesday June 11, indicates the institution in a press release sent to franceinfo. The first appeal was filed by the Adelico association (association for the defense of constitutional freedoms) which highlights problems with delays in calling elections.

The Adelico association, which Franceinfo contacted by telephone, explains that it highlights two points in its appeal, firstly the very short deadline for candidates to declare themselves but also the period of time between the dissolution of the National Assembly and the first round of voting. It takes 20 days minimum according to the Constitution and, according to the association, this period of time is not completely respected in certain overseas territories, such as Guyana or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.

The other appeal was filed by Maître Olivier Taoumi, lawyer registered with the Marseille bar, also contacted by Agence Radio France. He lives and works in Guyana, he also believes that this deadline of 20 days after the announcement of the dissolution by the President of the Republic of the dissolution of the National Assembly, is not respected for the regions and territories of ‘Overseas. “I will be a candidate in Guyana” in the legislative elections “depending on the decision of the Constitutional Council”, he explains. He hopes for a cancellation of the vote in order to have more “time” For “to make a campaign”.

The Constitutional Council will have to decide quickly in any case, this is not the first time that it has been asked to denounce very restricted deadlines after a dissolution. This already happened in 1981 and in 1988 under François Mitterrand, and each time the appeals were rejected by the Sages who judged that the Constitution was well respected.
