Around 8 a.m., an off-duty police officer from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) reported to his colleagues a vehicle traveling at high speed on Highway 55 North, near Saint-Étienne-des-Grès .

In Shawinigan, the police deployed located the suspect vehicle, which was traveling at a speed of 192 km / h, according to the measurement of a speedometer.

The driver then lost control of his vehicle and swerved at a roundabout in Grandes-Piles. He was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Independent Investigations Bureau has launched an investigation into the circumstances of this intervention involving the SQ.

Five BEI investigators are in charge of the investigation. The Service de police de la Ville de Québec (SPVQ) will act as a support police service, the BEI said in a press release.

At around 1:45 p.m., a motorist traveling northbound allegedly veered from his lane and hit a heavy truck going in the opposite direction.

The driver of the vehicle, a 66-year-old man from Shawinigan, suffered serious injuries, then his death was confirmed in the evening, said the spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec, Sergeant Stéphane Tremblay.

The driver of the truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
