A step back. The social network Twitter has decided to leave the EU Code of Practice against online disinformation, but “his obligations remain”announced Saturday, May 27 the European Commissioner for Industry, Thierry Breton, in a message published on the social network in question.

“You can run but you can’t hide”warned the European official. “Beyond the voluntary commitments, combating misinformation will be a legal obligation under the DSA (the Digital Services Act) from August 25”he reminded her. Our teams will be ready to enforce the law.” Between now and the entry into force of this regulation, Thierry Breton has planned to go to California to meet the leaders of Silicon Valley, offering them to pass “white audits”.

Commitments to contain fake news

Launched in 2018, and strengthened since, the European Code of Best Practices brings together around thirty signatories such as the internet giants Meta, Google, Microsoft, TikTok, but also smaller platforms, as well as professionals in advertising, fact -checkers and NGOs. This text contains some forty commitments aimed in particular at better cooperating with fact-checkers and depriving sites disseminating false information of publicity.

Since the takeover of Twitter six months ago, the management of the company and the regulations of the platform have been regularly controversial. Billionaire Elon Musk has notably relaxed the moderation of problematic content, a boon for many accounts banned after controversial or misleading comments on the news.
