Twisters Swirls to Top North American Box Office

(Los Angeles) Twistersa remake of the 1990s disaster film from director Lee Isaac Chung, topped the North American box office for its opening weekend, according to projections Sunday from Exhibitor Relations.


With $80.5 million in revenue between Friday and Sunday in theaters in the United States and Canada, “it’s an exceptional launch for an action-adventure film (remake), at levels well above the genre average,” underlines the FranchiseRe newsletter.

Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones as a weatherwoman forced to team up with a daredevil storm chaser (Glen Powell), Twisters revisits the 1996 film about the devastating Oklahoma tornadoes, which marked the entry into the golden age of computer-generated images.

Twisters dislodges the animated film from the top of the box office Despicable Me 4the latest installment in the Minions universe, which grossed $23.8 million.

In third place comes another animated film, Inside Out 2the highly anticipated sequel to the film from Pixar and Disney studios, this time devoted to the throes of adolescence (12.8 million).

The psychological horror drama Longlegsstarring Nicolas Cage, ranks fourth (11.7 million), ahead of A Quiet Place: Day Onethe third installment in the apocalyptic horror film series (6.1 million).
