Twelve departments are on heatwave red alert, a first in France so early in the season. In these departments, temperatures will continue to rise.

The heat will increase further, the thermometers will heat up. Friday, June 17, during the day, 40°C will be reached or even exceeded in a large southwestern quarter of the country. Faced with these temperatures, twelve departments, mainly located along the Atlantic coast, switched to red alert on Thursday June 16. 25 others were placed on orange alert. Caution is now required for everyone, and not just the most fragile people.

Red vigilance implies that the whole population must pay attention to the heat since with temperatures above 40°C, everyone can have worries“, explains Peter Huatmeteorologist. In the departments on red alert, schoolchildren and college students will be able to stay at home. However, the reception will remain assured. Created in 2004, the heatwave red alert has never been triggered so early in the year.
